So can anyone recommend a mechanic or repair shop for my 1995 F-350 dually's troubles? I do not want to get bent over getting this truck fixed. Being I really have no clue on the mechanics of this stuff and being a women I am a prime target for getting ripped off. Located in Lakeland Florida
My beloved truck is making a cracking sound in the rear end when I turn left or right in forward or reverse. Their is also a cracking sound in the front end but not as often. Also after I gave it a tune up (yea I did that myself) the check engine light is on. I know I should have taken it somewhere. The light was never on before. It runs GREAT! But the cracking sounds are really bothering me.
First thing I think of when I hear noise you describe (rhythmic noises associated with motion) are tires. Are there nails in your tires, etc. A lot of tire places will inspect for free. Find one and make sure they are good, then start looking for a deeper mechanical problem. just a guess, but cracking sound might be a U-joint. An under car place (midas, etc) should be able to take care of that. They will often do free inspections also. You might be able to get both done at the same place.
As far as the check engine light, places like autozone will pull the code and turn the light off for free. I would pull the code, make a note of it, and have them turn it off. The light may have been triggered by something during your tune up...if it doesn't come back on, great. If the light comes back on after driving a while, then I'd be concerned. Post what the code is on here.

Quite a few of us have had the "check engine" light come on after a tuneup-so don't feel bad. Many times it turns out we cracked one of the plastic vacuum lines on the passenger side. If so, a little bit of rubber vacuum line slid over both ends fixes it.
FWIW, you go girl! I read your other posts and see no reason why you can't do this stuff. Don't get discouraged if you make a mistake from time to time, that's how you learn.
Thanks ya'all. I did crack the vacuum lines when doing the tune up. I put new ones on and the check engine light hasnt come back on. Now the cracking noise from the rear and front end thats another story. I do not know how to describe it other than it cracks pulling forward in reverse or turning. Not constantly but when I start moving when I take my foot of the brake. Its got to be the gears right? Maybe I should just get a whole new rear end. A friend of a friend has one to fit my truck. He measured between the springs and said it will fit. He wants 300 bucks for it. Does that sound like a deal? Then comes the part of finding someone to hook me up and install the thing. Thats WAY out of my league. Im cool with a tune up or an oil change but ripping the rear end out of my truck that just ain't gonna happen. :-) A girls got some morals.
I would try changing the gear oil in the rear end before I would go that far. The oil needs to be changed from time to time. It gets dirty like anything else. If you have limited slip, don't forget to put the additive in. This is also a great time to inspect the gears to see if there is a bigger problem. When I bought my truck, the rear end actually chirped the tires on sharp turns because the limited slip was locked up. This could be your problem too. It could be a pretty cheap and easy fix.
Don't underestimate yourself. If you can change spark plugs, you can change a rear axle. It's REALLY easy to do, if you decide to go that route. The hardest part is probably pushing the axle around to get it in place. Everything else just bolts on.
I'd also check the brakes. If you have a broken spring or a cracked shoe it can make strange sounds.
Asking people in here to recommend a mechanic is tough, because we live all over the country. You'd probably be better off asking people who live near you.
As a general rule of thumb, stay away from dealerships and chains. The guy you want is an independent who doesn't have a fancy shop with a flat screen TV in the waiting room. Chains and dealerships are there to make money. The little guy is there to take care of customers and be honest.
