I have never messed with rear brakes, but I am wanting to. Not to mention I have one hanging up and dragging. How in the heck do you get the drum off? I have essentially beat the tar out of this thing trying to get it off, to no avail. Any tricks? Is there a retainer of some sort that keeps em on?
Thanks.
The ridge worn into the drum will not get past the brake shoes. You have to go into the slot on the back side and adjust the star wheel to retract the shoes.

Reason: add a link
if the adjusters will not back down from rust and hi temp grease burned out, spary with PB or Liquid Wrench and let set overnight
if you are going to reuse the shoes after spraying in penetrating oil, spray the shoes and all brake components you are going to reuse heavily with strong brake cleaner and let set out in sun until next day
use only silicone hi temp brake grease on adjuster threads and flat slide spots on backing plate where shoes slide on plate, only a thin film needed
use soft organic material shoes and will never have drum wear problem again
thanks for all the replies, but it is NOT the brakes. I will post a new thread with the BIGGER problem. Or I guess I'll just do it here. I started to smell a burning rubber smell today, so I got out and inspected the rear drivers side tire area. Only to find the spring had dislodged from the top and is now leaning out enough to be rubbing on the tire. I have no idea how to mess with springs...or if it is even possible to reseat it?
