temp gage not reading

The needle on the coolant temp gage did not raise up at all today on my 98xlt during 1/2 hr drive to work. Usually the needle will read about 1/2 way up after about 4 minutes of running from cold. It does not appear to be overheating at all. suspect temp sender. Thermostat itself is about 3 yrs old. Any advice?

As far as I know your 98 has the standard Ford single wire sending unit & if you remove the wire from it & ground it the gauge should read full hot.

thanks. do you know where that sensor is located? I'm going to drive it some distance this afternoon. on the chance the t-stat is stuck open I still should get some temp rise in 30 miles unless it is the sensor I think.

Should be near the t-stat housing. Red/white stripe wire.

Good point on the T-Stat, it could be stuck open, but I think they usually stick closed.

Edit

Is the heater blowing as hot as it normally does?

heater is definitely not blowing as hot as it should. also on my trip, needle rose to just above the "C" mark rather than half way up the scale.

Looks like a bad T-stat then.
