I'm not sure how your truck electric system works but when I shut mine off wherever the needles are on all the gauges is where they stay until I start it up again. The way to test your fuel gauge to see if it is operating is to unplug the connector at the pump, the gauge should go to E. Then you would ground the + wire for the fuel level sensor to chassis ground and it should sweep to F. My guess if it wont goto E unplugged is either your gauge is bad or the signal wire is shorted someplace. if it is ok then suspect your level sensor
Did this problem come about slowly over time, or suddenly after some event???
Is the yellow "Check Gauge" warning light lit???? Any other gauges acting out???
Been having any electrical problems with the dash gauges, battery, alternator lately????
Try thumping the instrument panel to see if the gauge is just stuck.
There is a "slosh module" on the back of the instrument panel fuel gauge circuit thats supposed to dampen/average out/slow down, the gauge reading & it sometimes acts out & causes gas gauge problems.
If you come to suspect the in tank fuel level sender, do a search for "slosh module" & in one of the posts will be ohms readings for the fuel sender that you can use to check the sender out, or sub resistors at the tank electrical connection to cause the gauge to read full, empty, 1/2 full, ect.
If you've recently used a tank of out of spec fuel with too much sulphur in it, it can cause sender electrical contact problems & Chevrons Techron Concentrate Plus in the 20oz size in the tank at the pump before filling, so we get good mixing, claims it'll remove the sender contact corrosion.
If still no joy with the gauge, at least the Techron will tidy up the fuel injectors, intake valves, piston crowns & combustion chamber deposits, so it'll at least do something for the gold spent!!!
