First off, start with a cool engine. Cover your alternator and your Kwik filter with a plastic bag. Water will be no good for either one of those two. Simple Green has been used by many of the guys here quite effectively. If you have any areas of major grime, like down where the IC tubes connect to the intercooler, you may need to scrape them or scrub them off before you spray it down. Spray it on, let it sit for a while (check the bottle to be sure on how long - just don't let it dry) then hose it off. Don't use a pressure washer or a car wash. The high pressure water can get forced into some areas where it doesn't belong.

I'll second everything JT mentioned, although I'd like the engine to be a bit warm... not HOT, just warm.
