Possible Expy purchase, need input

I'm looking at a '97 XL 4x4. This one has a 5 speed manual tranny. I guess my main question is how good these trannys are? I'm unfortuneatly having to downsize, which means getting rid of my '92 F350 Crew. It's my daily driver, but I guess you could say that now I find myself over-trucked. The Expy would take it's place. I do go to the mountains alot, hunting, fishing, etc, though not much aggressive off-roading, just mostly mountain 2 tracks. I imagine I'll end up using chains occasionally, hence my concern about the tranny. Also, can anybody give me an idea of possible fuel milage? In 5th at 75 mph, the tack reads about 2800 rpm, so I'm guessing mabe 3.73's or so in the diffs. My kids' Expy and Mtneer are automatics, and run about 2300 rpms or so at 75. I would hope to get decent milage with the manual. I applogize for rambling, but I'm tired. Any input would be appreciated.
Regards, Rick

I bought a 96 Explorer Sport new with 5 speed and 4WD and never had any problem other than when I came down from Pikes Peak. Engine light had to cycle three times before it would then work properly. Lost a thermostat at 50,000 miles but other than that normal maintenance until I sold it. Sorry I did so. I could get 18 mpg around town and usually got 20-21 on the highway at 70-75 miles per hour. Differential had 3.55 gears. It was a good vehicle but it had to go as wife hated 5 speed and wanted a van. I'm still married to her!
