hard to start???

Hi, the retard diaphragm only has an effect on timing when the engine is running at curb idle. Timing is retarded to provide a smoother idle and lower emissions. I am starting to think that you may have a bad head gasket or combustion chamber crack on the side you get the white smoke from. You can check by hooking up an air line to a spark plug adapter. Put the piston at TDC; you can go by the rotor position. Turn on the air and watch for bubbles in the coolant. Another test would be to hook up your timing light to see if your ignition is quiting as the engine starts to quit runnung. Also, if you can keep it running, pull one plug wire off at a time to check for a dead cylinder. If you were getting water in a cylinder, it would explain the intermittent hard cranking.

I'd forget all about those fancy starters and distributors and concentrate on that white smoke! That should have been the first place to look. There's alot of folks that believe an old truck should blow smoke and that it's normal for it to do so. I'm here to tell ya, IT'S NOT. If you got smoke coming out the back and running rough, the first thing done is a compression test. You may have a cylinder filling with water causing it to have a hard time turning over.

Take a look and see-
Joe

hard to start???

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 11-Jun-02 AT 05:35 PM (EST)]ok here's the latest...
couldn't get it started , had to tow to local shop. They called me back siad the carb was flooding so bad the crankcase was loaded with gas . needed a new carb. I picked up a Holley 600 and delivered to them , they called today said it was ready. They changed the oil and spark plugs, adjusted the timing and carb. I picked it up. It seemed to be running ok, athough I felt like it was a little too advanced on the timing , due to an occasional audible "thump thump" from the driver's side exhaust and a higher idle speed. I adjusted it a little and managed to get it to just an occasional "thump" (almost like slight backfire) on that same side.Passenger side stays pretty smoothe regardless of timing position. but no matter how I adjusted it wouldn't completely smooth out. Is this just pressure in the muffler building up or would an occasionallly sticking valve cause this. Will too much gas in the crankcase do damage. Stopped at another garage and asked if they would do compression tests and check timing, -have to wait til Friday. prior to all this cylinder #5 spark plug had more carbon deposits than any of the others. Oh, and no more smoking that I can see.

What kind of carb was your old one? The idea that you have to have a new carb is kind of suspect. I have a 37 year old ford 4100 that still works. Set your timing at 6 to 8 deg and leave it alone for awhile. This thread is the best one on the entire site. Give us the compression readings. Regards, Mike

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 13-Jun-02 AT 09:31 AM (EST)]Pony carbs refers to them as restored carbs because they rebuild old carbs but also re-engineer them removing inherent defects. The carb is a 4100 1.08 venturi, pretty rare from what I understand, something like 475 cfm, specifically designed for 289/302s. It's not that old ( to me) from Pony (online). but I did notice a lot staining or dampness around the gaskets plus a strong gas smell from time to time prior to my problems. plugs as well as my exhaust were pretty black with carbon, thought it might be running a little rich.
I should know something tomorrow about the compression.

I would like to find another 4100. The pump cover and power valve cover screws need to be tightned every so often. I would bet that a fuel pressure regulator would have fixed the flooding assuming the float and needle valve were ok. The Holley has about 100 more places for leaks to develop. The 4100 and it's little brother, the 2100 will operate with the top removed. Let us know what the compression readings are. Regards, Mike

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 15-Jun-02 AT 04:37 PM (EST)]she's back, compression checked out solid, timing was off, new carb was adjusted too lean on the driver's side and idle set about 400rpm too high. and a bunch of sediment in the fuel filter- I guess you go through a few bad garages to find a good one. Guy only charged me $50. . Might be willing to part with that 4100... try me.
