Looking for Ideas or suggestions?? I have replaced my left axle seal about 3 times and it will go a little while and start leaking again. I have new axle bearings on both axles but am only having problems on the left side. I originally found a little burr on the axle and used emory cloth to clean it up. Do they make a sleeve or a another seal that is better?? part numbers?? I have a motor bearing seal with single lip spring on it. And yes it is installed correctly. any suggestion will help??
Is there a groove worn in the shaft at all? Even the slightest line will cause a failure. You may have to measure the shaft and see if you can get a speedi sleeve from a good auto parts store. They make sleeves in many different sizes and lengths. When you spin the shaft, there's no wobble? That would cause a failure after a while. Also, make sure your vent on the rear is clear. If it's plugged,This will build up pressure and cause a seal to blow out.
I too am having problems with the left side. My 66 has a Dana 44 (Oem Ford eqivalent)I know this seems odd as it wasn't until 68' that they should of been in that truck so I'm told. I have an inner seal then a tapered bearing and then an outer grease seal in the retainer. after packing the bearing the grease seems to be passing thru the retainer into the drum as it heats up. If this is the same problem as you please post if you find a remedy!!
Barry is spot on. I had the same problem too, and finally had to put silicon in the housing to stop a new axle seal from leaking. It's funny to me to see how rubber had cut a groove in a metal axle.
Make sure that you don't have oil on your brake shoe material.

That is weird you have a dana 44 in your truck. mine has a 9" so the seals are different. i am going to a attempt to see if i can get a speedy sleeve to install. These part houses around here really suck!!
