I have a 1996 F250 and want to swap a mono beam front axle (F350) in place of the IFS. What front axle do I need? I know I have 4:10 gears. Where is the best place to find an axle from an F350? What years can I use? Is this an expensive swap? Will a front F350 solid axle bolt in place of the stock IFS axle? Sorry for all the questions, but I'll need ball joints soon and just want to do the comparison.
any D60 from an 85.5 to 97 F350 will bolt up directly!
i actually have a D60 for sale that would bolt in directly (came from a 88 F350) but depending on your location it may be impracticle.
D60 is pretty much the only straight axle that will bolt in. all others were TTB (two piece axle housings) or had leaf spring perches in the wrong place
money wise you will be looking at around $1000. a straight axle D60 usually goes anywhere from 800-1200. then you have to think about whether the axle is ready for service or if you think it needs rebuilding... which can take a considerable amount of money and time!
dont be sorry, its how you learn! however if you search google or even just here you will find plenty of ppl who have done this. I have actually done this swap more times than i can count on both hands for either me or a buddy or family! i have some pics of my most recent swap in my gallery of when i built my 85 F250 as a rock crawler!
good luck and lemme know if you have anymore questions!
Thanks...I'll keep my eyes open. This isnt something I need tomorrow, but I thought I would see how hard it was to do the swap. What I didnt realize is how much they wanted for a solid front axle. Dang, they sell like there gold plated! I was hoping to go to a junkyard and find 50 laying in a pile in a back corner for a couple hundred bucks a piece....wishfull thinking I guess. Thanks again for all your help....
that axle would work just fine actually for the time being. i ran 5.13 gears out back and 3.55's up front a long time and never had a problem. you just cant use 4x4 on high traction surfaces or you could eaily mes up your t-case internals. just be mindful however you shouldn't be using 4x4 on the pavement anyways!
yea those one ton front axle are pricey! most people in the offroad world want 1 tons for their strength and reliability and most owners of 1 tons know this. that makes them expensive.
