Why do you want to do this? Going from 3.55 to 3.73 is barely going to be noticable at all. If you just want the LS, then there are lots of options - but it depends on what you're going to use the van for.
Finding an 8.8" axle with 3.73 gears may be a bit (?!) difficult. I think the OEM ratios were 3.55, 4.11, and a couple of highway ratios, but nothing between the 3.55 and 4.11.
So your only realistic option is to redo your axle. Make it LS and change the gears. But it won't be cheap, especially if you have to pay someone.
Thanks for all of your posts.
I plan on using the van for surf trips to Baja, and some of it
will be off road, sand and such.So I want to put some
BFGoogrich T/A KO tires on,taller and wider.I was afrad
that the ratio would get out of wack
When I looked at the '94 van owner guide that came with
it,it shows that thir is a dana 3.73 L/S ,I looked just now
and it must be a E250 becase it is a 5,400 lb.
If money was not a problem I would buy a new Sportsmoble
4x4 but such is not the case,so does anybody have any
ideas. I drive van every day for work.
Thanks Carson
4.10s are only 15% more gear than your 3.55. Add 15% to your current RPM at a given speeed, and that will give you what your RPM will be with 4.10s.
If you get taller tires, the difference will be less, and you'll need the additional torque multiplication to maintain good acceleration at any rate.
I don't know what your internal tranny ratios are, but I'm guessing they aren't far off from my 97 Expy's E4OD. I run 4.10s with street-sized tires and I think it's perfect. These are very heavy vehicles and you need all the advantage you can get.
The explorer rear axles are very common with 3L73 gears and even 4L10 gears. I have an 8.8 rear disk brake axle that has 3L73 gears in it. So they can be had and I am not sure what year ford started but some where along the line the explorers started getting 31 spline axles.
I know this may not be a good comparrison but i noticed a change in ratios in my 65 mustang when I went from 3L50 to 3L70. It was enough change that for a street driven car i would not go to 4.10 gears. The car is lighter than a truck so the truck may not feel the same as a light car would.

That's correct. And Rangers can have that, too, but this is the first time I've heard of a stok 3.73 in a Bronco. Not impossible, but I find it highly unlikely.
