Exclamation WARNING: Possible driveline failure!!

Just got a call from my son who works for a local auto body shop. He says that they just got in the THIRD F350 Crew Cab that has had the front driveline fail and punch a hole in the floorboard!! Now I don't know too many specifics - if it was all gassers, all diesels, or a combination; what year these trucks were - just know that they are 2003 or newer; if they were towing at the time or not; I know at least some of them were automatics (don't know if all were or not).

Since I am going to go pick up a new fifth wheel in a couple weeks I was wondering if anyone else has heard of this? Sure would hate to have my brand new 5'er stacked up on the road someplace before I ever got her home! Not to mention my truck skewered!

Also Ford is not issuing a recall as of yet and is not acknowleging the problem...leaving the insurance companies to deal with it instead!

So, just to get this straight... The front driveshaft gets torn off at the Transfer Case, and it is sent up into the underbody?
Correct?

If I was a betting person, i'd say they were lifted trucks.
Find out more specifics ,we have had none in our area.

When lifted the front drive shaft slip joint becomes suspect!

Really?

Either that, or they were using 4x4 on dry pavement.

Check your u-joint bolts!

I'd love to know what the "failure mode" was - u-joint? u-joint retainers? Driveshaft slip-joint?

I would also bet my money on lifted trucks or high mileage trucks that are used and abused with no maintainence. I have a 12/02 buils SD with 77K on it and no probs of that nature yet (knock, knock, knock on wood.)

sounds like lifted trucks with a bad lift job. the driveline angles were probably way to high for stock shafts.

If the front joint let go, wouldn't the shaft pogo stick the tcase ?
(Which is behind the cab ?).

I would also say this thread is worthless without pictures!!!!!!!!!
of the resulting damage and we could see what let go !!!!!!

It might have pogo'ed and took out the double cardagan joint and then went through the floor .Who knows

Is that like a Universal joint made out of 2 sweaters?

I'm sorry, I was born this way.

Could the driveline crumple, split (Worm) and shove itself into the drivers floor? ( Extremely unlikely ! !) What ya runnin 2000 horse Mod ? Even with diesel grunt, your unlikely to see this.

Tractor comp ?
