Im hoping some one here can help I have a 2000 F350 Superduty 2wd V10 with 4 wheel abs and rear disc. Just did a complete brake job replaced pads with Motorcraft pads replaced sliders lubed everything well And machined all the rotors. Now all of a sudden it like trying to stop a freight train to the point of going through a red light. It stoped fine before. This truck pulls a lot of weight in the bed and on a trailer and it wont even stop when its empty. When we pulled the front wheels the rotors are abnormally hot and has heat spots. I hope somone has had this problem.
Thanks in advance
Bad pads? If you're getting heat damage, it sounds like the pads are clamping on the rotors appropriately... just not enough friction. I'd be tempted to swap the pads out (I like the Wagner ThermoQuiet pads) and see if that solves your problem.
Brakes need time to break in. About the worst thing you can do is go out right after a brake job and stand on the brakes hard, especially after machining the rotors. The pads need to seat into the rotors. The spots you see are more likely material transfer onto the rotors then heat spots although I guess it could be either. Try removing the pads, scuff them up with sand paper. Take it for a nice easy test drive, nice easy stops and you should feel that they get gradually get better. Try not to overheat them!
When my shop performs a brake job, I caution each customer to be easy on the brakes for a least the first 100 miles.
If all else fails switch to another brand of brake pad. We stopped using the motorcraft pads for 2 reasons. Noise and stopping power in some cases.
I now use ceramic pads they stop well and no noise. It doesn't take long to brake the pads in Usually 20 to 30 stops. That is if the rotors were turned properly with the right surface to break the pads in. You can turn them too smooth. I'm wondering if the rears are working correctly.
Thanks for all your replys. The rotors are still within spec im tempted to put new ones on but they dont look cheap. Its been about a a few days so i think the should of worn in by now. Ill try a diffrent brand of pads in the morning and ill probally machine the rotors again to take out the hot spots. I hope there still within spec because i didn't price the front rotors but they look expensive. The rears seem to be working correctly but ill look into that again tomorrow
Well i think its fixed. Today I replaced the master a flushed the brake fluid as it looked like motor oil and smelled burnt. It stops a lot better nowhere near as good as my F150 but it is a really heavy truck cant even guess how heavy it is it has a huge steel work box with ladder racks and a huge welder. Thanks for all your help
