I have an 83' f-150 with a 300 six. i am thinking about getting a 5-speed tranny for it. are there any that will drop right in? if not what could i put in it?
I had your same problem. I tried a ZF42 (I have a 460) but couldnt seem to find someone who liked fixing them (so a local core and rebuild were not an option). A rebuilt with a core charge was over 2K (I had no core) After I got it in, It still seemed to be geared to low on the top end and I lost the granny.
I put the original T-19 (after a rebuild) and put in a ranger torque splitter from advance adapters (Paso Robles, CA). I paid around 600 for a used one and 600 for a rebuild and parts.
I highly recommend this solution. I basically have 8 gears now. They make adapters to fit your engine/trans. my mileage went from 10-12MPG to 14-16. It will pay for itself in a year or two.
Are you wanting to replace an automatic with automatic or are you converting it to a manual or what? Your not making sense. As far as transmissions bolting up the transmission for a 302 will go on a 300 but you will have to use the fly wheel from 300.(Found out the hard way) The 302 flywheel is balanced different. I did an automatice to manual conversion on my 82 ford with a 302. I bought a flywheel from a guy I know that he said was for a 302 manual. Well he lied. Started the truck and it shoke like crazy. Cheaked the part number on the flywheel and sure enough it was to a 300. Didn't get my money back so now I have 2 good flywheels for a 300 and none for a 302 that I need. I ran out of money. I was very !
81fordf-250, You are right, not enough information. the truck has a 4 speed manual w/granny low now, and i want to stay with a manual. I am looking for a 5-speed that will still have a little torque and good highway gearing. do you have any ideas.
i have a 92 model and i need a m5od or zf with hydr. clutch and no speedo gear hole there are hard to find in my neck of the woods not to mention the price im thinking of going with a AOD and a floor shift i have found a whole truck cheeper with set up its an 86 lwb the truck runs but its ugly
It is to my knowledge that the 300 with the 4 speed does have good power in all gears but if you go to an overdrive trany you will have little to no power in overdrive. They will not get better fuel economy if you pull a lot or live around a lot of hills you will be down shifting all the time.
