Wiring

I was looking under my hood of my 65' F250 this weekend and noticed that quite a few wires were looking pretty bad. Some were barely holding on by a few strings and the insulation was harder than a rock.

So here are my questions:

1) Should I start replacing the wires when/where I work on each area
2) Where can I get a good selection of wire types/colors to replace them with the best fitting/looking end fittings
3) How can you tell what gauge the wires are/suppose to be?
4) Should I upgrade to a different/updated connections (like the insulated connections on top of the intake manafold from the starter cylinoid which I need to replace and can't find in any parts stores...)

I believe you can order from some of the aftermarket places for your Light harness, alternator wireing and some of the minor stuff. For the main wiring harness you may have to go with an aftermarket harness like the one from Painless wiring. There was a post on here previously where someone referred to a place that will make original replacement harnesses for Fords. Try a search to find the website. If your going stock this may be what you want.

I was going to customize her in the long run, so I wanted to replace the wiring pieces as I move forward. Would a new wiring harness have to be taken apart or do they come seperated... I hope I'm making sense...

I just did a basic search on the web and found this link, I'll try to find that other link I mentioned.

Looks like this kit has everything.

From the pictures I've seen on websites and in magazines the harnesses are fully assembled.

gage guide

If you go to the Painless website and download the install manual for the universal kit, the last pages list the wire gages used as well as what the wire is for, so that may be a good guide as far as what gage wire you need, assuming you dont just buy a pre-made harness.

Issue has come up on few occasions. Referred to Mr. Mustang thru another member about 3 years ago and found they made reproduction harnesses for limited year(s) Ford trucks. The harnesses were not listed in their online catalog, had to contact them. Offered all the harnesess except for the dash harness. Have not found anyone who makes the dash harness. Replaced the harnesses on my 65 F100, vary in price. Same connectors and wire color codes, just unplug old and plug in the new. Not sure if Mr. Mustang is still in business. If intend to add other curcuits, aftermarket may be way to go.

From: Home, at last!
I, as well as Ken the webmaster, posted years ago about mr mustang. I have started to replace my wiring. I am using the headlight and taillight harness from Mr. Mustang. Perfect fit. The generator harness they were selling is for the V8 engines. I have a 262 six and had to modify the harness to reach the other side of the engine.

As far as Mr. Mustang(checkered flag parts) I have been unable to reach them. The phone number I have for them is no longer a working number.

Check back here, I have found a source for the proper connectors that is period correct (I hope) I have not received these yet. I will post again when I have more information.

Had a question about the harness and was referred to the company who produced the harnesses for Mr. Mustang. Will take 2-3 weeks, will attempt to locate the information and inquire if the harnesses are still available. It would be a shame to loose a source for these vintage wire harnesses.

Thanks guys, I hope to hear back shortly. I'm still wondering if I should replace the wires as I go since I'm not doing the "tear-down" until next year, but I want to get this girl running...
