Paint prep...?

Hey,
Which is the best way to prep a truck for painting? Should I strip it to bare metal, etch it, body filler? Or should i sand it smooth, seal it, etch bare metal, filler?

How did you guys prep your trucks?
Thanks.

Dont strip it to bare metal unless you have to. Only strip area's where you may have adhesion problems, or problems with prevoius paint / body work.

Sand it smooth, at the same time have all the body work done, primed, spot puttied or glazed. Seal it if you are not sure what the paint layer below is, many times I just prep very well, and wet sand very well and avoid sealing. It all depends on what I am doing. Then prime it, guide coat it, block sand it, prime and sand some more, repeat until you hate the vehicle and swear you will never do this again, then sand some more. Then you are ready for paint, clear, then more sanding & buffing then hand glazing. LOL

So I am not the only one that says this and goes back for more punishment. But least you can fix your bodywork without too much trouble. Its all the stuff that can bite you when painting if you are not carefull, follow flashtimes, proper mixing, using the products correctly, weather, or even equiptment, ect, ect, ect,or even if that can really ruin your day sometimes and know you now have to fork out cashola for more pricey paint.
It all depends on condition and what you are doing if you should strip or not. If it something you want to keep a long time and your not sure what repairs or how well they were done are hiding under there, paint is peeling off, or just too many layers of paint, then you probably should strip and start fresh. If its a good catalyzed paint in good shape, then really wouldn't need to. If you are using a 2k primer, no need to really seal, but sometimes its smart to to get the car all one color that will help with coverage of the paint. Or if you are painting the same color, try to use a primer that will be easy to get hiding over.

Does it matter what kind of paint there is on the truck? Can you use any type of paint to cover existing paint?

If the paint is good (ie no rust), sand it with 180-220 grit. You definitely want to get through the clear coat if there is any. Wash wash wash the truck. Then shoot a 2K urethane primer on (2-4 coats). Sand to 400, then seal it. then top coat it. DO NOT seal it untill you are ready to paint it.

The 2K (2-catalyst) primers are excellent at adhesion to a variety of old substrate. I am using the NASON (dupont) paint system. Their primers and sealers are reasonable, and they have nice metallic OEM finishes.

If you happen to sand to bare metal, use a "self-etching primer" on those bare spots prior to the 2K primer. I am using rattle can etch primer. 1 coat is plenty.

Good luck!!
