speedometer cable

On a ford-o-matic transmission, hooked up to a 292 yblock "original set up."
How many different types of gears are on a speedometer cable? or should I say in the transmission? how do you get the gear out? and how does it stay on the cable? I don't have much room underneath my truck only what a couple of jackstands will allow, is it possible to do it by just reaching it by feel? or do I need a special tool to pull gear out?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Speedo cable/gear is held in by a single 1/4 20 bolt. it pulls out after loosening it. the retainer looks sort of like a distributer hold down. The gear will be attached to the cable with a C type clip. simpley pull off and a new lower or higher tooth unit can be installed. Watch the rotation of the gear some go left and some go right.

NPD carrys a good selection of gears along with Dennis Carpenter. The local parts dept at Ford also carries them. If you cant match something up using a truck try a T bird or galaxie with a FOM
