Hauled a piece of equipment this weekend of one of the passes near hear. Very disapointed. First off, truck got less than 6 mpg, that included running empty for half the distance. Due to poor weight distribution on the trailer, top speed never exceeded 50 mph. On the pass, truck would downshift into very low gear, and hold about 3400 rpms. Then, it would start screaming like crazy, with no change in rpm, boost pressure, or anything else I could notice. I assumed it was the electic cooling fan kicking in. Then it would start to make a very high pitched scream, that was deafening loud in the cab. Again, no change in any of the guages, boost, rpm, temp. etc. I have not idea (guess) what this would be.
All in all, a very big disapointment.
My guess for weight would be about 10,000 lbs, less than my fully loaded trailer would weigh. I am not sure about this, but, my father-in-law pulls this regularly with his 2002 F-150, and prior to that truck with a 1967 chevy 1/2 ton pickup.
up and down the pass tow haul mode was used. No, I did not notice it on the pass. I would liken it to the fan kicking in, and then, the fans turbocharger kicking in. The first sound was always heard, before the second one developed. The second sound would quit before the first one would cease.
sounds like your have some problems. prolly cronic sensor/electrical connection.
seems like the bad apples are primarally related to those conditions.
i dont see how an improperly loaded trailer is the fault of the truck and what was your gross combined counting the chubsterrs in the truck ifin you dont mind.
Weird I have pulled over 10.987 ft passes at 7/10% grade and could accelerate up them with my rig, the trailer weighs in at 14.9 so it is heavy. (see gallery) Yes the fan is loud and you need to be up in RPM for the 6.0 to run well and pull hard.
Yep, you've got some issues that need to be addressed, pulled the boat in my gallery over 2 Alaskan mountain passes twice with no problems...45 up the hills, 40 down the hills averaging 8mpg. Sure the fan kicking on is a bit loud, but definately not a screaming sound.
Let me know what they say about the screaming. I too have the sound after the cooling fan kicks in the first time, when I'm about 3000 rpm and the fan is on the edge of re-engaging. Youll know its the fan because you can manipulate it with rpm. I think mines gonna need a repair soon??
Something is very wrong for you to get performance like that. I'm running similar loads to yours, and I have never dropped below the high tens for MPGs and that's climbing over top of Flagstaff.
The screeching thing is what would have me upset. That sounds like an injured turbo, but folks tell me that I am too used to the "old way" with diesels.
The fan is loud and has to be the most complicated mechanical fan I've ever seen. The computer regulates the speed of the fan based on the cooling need, and to actually see all the parts to it is a real sight to behold. I am figuring they took this supercomplicated electro-mechanical approach because a fan of that size probably requires some serious horsepower, meaning that the alternator might have had difficulty keeping up. Othwerise, the obvious answer to precision control is to ditch the mechanical setup and put an electric one in there.
I pulled my 11.5K boat this past week ('06 F350). Got 12.1 and 11.4mpg by the computer. The lower mpg due to 100 weather and me pulling at 70mph. Loved the Tow/Haul mode, never realy knew the boat was there.
Just got back from our 2nd trip pulling the travel trailer (10K) on Sunday (400 Miles), and let me tell you this thing is a Piece of CRAP!! in its current form 06 F350 6.0L CC LB 4x4 3.73 20" wheels
My 1st pull, Two weeks ago was at 50-60 mph (300 miles)and I really was not happy than, but this weekend IM PISSED!
We headed out on Friday morning and got on the Florida Turnpike for our trip to Leesburg, FL. Got up to cruising speed, which is 70 MPH, truck would NOT stay in 5th, kept down shifting to 4th and wanted to run at 2600-2800 RPMs Boost was ~28 psi. This truck will not pull at highway speed! remember this is florida, it was flat.
So after ~160 miles we get to our destination, filled truck up and after my hand calculation, Get This... 7.67 MPG
I need to fix this before our trip to TN on June 1st. Which will be ~1500 miles round trip. at the present MPG IM going to go in the POOR house.
Left work early on Monday and headed home to pickup the Travel Trailer and than headed to the the dealer. Diesel tech met me in the parking lot and he hooked his laptop to the diagnostic port and we headed out to the interstate and I proceeded to show him the problem. One hr later, I let him off back at the dealership.
He say that engine seems to be OK, but what is happening is not normal. He and the tranny gut is going to go over the data.
He mentioned one thing while driving down the highway, if I can remember the exact thing, that some LOAD data point was reading 99%. it was some calc. of many parameters.
So hopefully it is something simple to fix.
I got to hand it to my dealership, they do treat me well, which I think we ALL agree they should after spending what we do on our trucks. I mean I call them in the am and the service Mgr told me to bring it right in. Cant beat that.
