Either i am gettin some really cheap starters, or i am just a dumb *** when it comes to puttung them in. I have gone through 6 starters in the last 8 days. All of them are breaking the mounting ears, and this last one i took off about 10 minutes ago busted the entire front housing that covers the bendex off. I'm not sure where to go from here honestly. I think after all the defective trade ins i have done this week, Advance Auto Parts is about to close there doors to me. Any advise???
my advise go to napa for a starter, i went through 4 starters from advance, and auto zone has the same problem. they recondition the nose cones on the starters and cut them to much so the starter slides in to far.
I just went through a similar issue on my 86 with a 300 and manual trans. A few things I noticed was that the starter bolts kept backing out allowing the starter to sit at odd angles (fixed by loc-tite), the steel plate between block and bellhousing was warped from where previous owner apparently used a gorilla to try to tighten bolts down to keep them from backing out (also allowed starter to sit at odd angle, fixed by ball peen hammer) and a lot of wear on the flywheel teeth (fixed by new flywheel). Haven't had a problem since those problems were fixed. The biggest culprit apparently was the flywheel.
Just a few areas to maybe consider.
i have been having a problem trying to start my truck first my starter was messed up so i had it rebuilt n it kept on grinding when i tried to start it n then i changed the flywheel n it done the same thing grinding bad so i bought a new starter from autozone n it is still grinding when i try to start it n when i had the transmission pulled back i fixed the plate between the motor n transmission so i don't think is the problem but i don't know does anyone have any suggestions and i have tried to put washers between the starter and that plate on the motor
When i first bought me 85 F150 with a 302 automatic trans. the guy told me that the starter had fallen off thats why he stoped using it, so i went and bought a new starter and got the truck going but i think it was about the sixth time starting the engine with the new starter it broke the ears off again so i got under the truck again looking for thinks that could cause this, the flexplate was good but then when i looked at the bellhousing there was a long crack in it(i have pictures in my gallery), so i took the transmission out got it to a transmission shop they got me a new housing and rebuild it using the internal parts form my old transmission, once i got transmission back in there i took the starter to a starter shop he had a used housing laying aroung so he put that one on there for me and when i installed it i used loc-tite on the bolts and so far i have never had a problem.
it tries to start but won't all it does is grinds it acts like the starter is kicking out too far what could it b
Are you sure its the right starter for it, becuase there is vehicles that have a smaller flexplate with less theeth on it. When i got the starter for my truck it did the same thing so i went back and he gave me a different starter and that one looks like it has smaller theeth and that one works fine.
hey ya all /i have the same problem igo to start my truck and i get a grinding sound but than i try again and it start no problem, ask mech he said my fly wheel migth be missing a tooth causing this to happen know and than any body know what else it could be
