I have a 2000 PSD, I have recently replaced both batteries and the fuel filter. Both have not corrected the problem with starting. When I first turn the key over for the Glow Plugs and begin to start the PSD it has a hard time kicking over its almost like something is draining the battery the volts on the gauge drop below 10 and it takes a few seconds for it to kick over and start. Any Ideas? The guys at BoneZone told me it could be a glow plug issue but before I spend 800.00 on that I am trying the small things first. I am thinkning my next step is the relay. Also it is not very cold here these days and it does it almost everytime I start it whether the engine is warm or cold.
Have you checked all your grounds? May have a bad connection. You say the volts drop below 10. Is that just with key on or when cranking the engine. Have you checked the glowplug realy to make sure you have power at both large terminals. When you say it has a hard time kicking over do you mean rolling over or acctually firing up. You may have a problem in your starter causing a large draw on the batteries draining your voltage and making it hard for the motor to roll over.
When I am cranking the engine over it drops below 10 which it has just started doing recently it acts like it is having a problem rolling over and the volts just drop off the gauge. I have yet to check the terminals to see. Do you have to do this with the key in the on position or what is the best way to check?
Definatly a connector problem somewhere if the guage is dropping off like that and new batteries. Make sure all the cable connectores are down to new metal everywhere.
Just had time to go out and check the GPR and this is what I found had power to the back big terminal prior to turning the key on and no power to the rest of the terminals. Turned key on and checked the terminals had no power to the other big terminal and little power to both small terminals. Then once the WTS light went out had power to all the terminals. I am thinking my GPR is bad.
Came in the house after checking the GPR and took a shower paid a few bills go out to get in 2000 PSD to go run some errands buy a new GPR and the Truck will not turn over yeah thats right dead just does the usual romp romp romp thing will not fire so now what do I do besides **** and moan and go out and buy a battery charger/booster thing to get it going.
Oh yeah and I had it running this morning after checking the GPR. Something is draining the battery I think maybe alternator time. I have to get it to bonezone to have them check it out
Yup sounds like something drawing to me! These trucks do not like to start unless they have over 10 volts. They will roll over but will not start. I would get the charging system checked and if its fine you have a bad conection somewhere. Keep us updated and we'll do what we can. I'm running into problems with my dads 2001 and need help here myself!!(differant subject though!)
OK a GPR replaced and 2 new batteries and I am rolling again luckily the batteries were replced for free since I just replaced them 6 months ago. Will let you know what else happens. Also Alternator checked out fine.

I don't want to rain on your parade but if your alternator checked out and your 6mos old batteries died, you still have a problem. You're up and running now solely off of the new batteries.
Whatever killed the previous batteries is likely still at work. Now it could have been the faulty GPR but I somehow doubt it. I think you might want to look into this some more before you get stranded. I've never heard of a faulty GPR draining 2 new batteries.
Did you test the GPR before replacing it? Could it be wired improperly? Don't take this the wrong way but I suspect you still have a problem and just want to help. I would think you have a hot wire to ground short somewhere. JMO.
The GPR did test bad earlier in the morning before it actually died. I had noticed it being hard to start for the last couple of weeks so hopefully with the GPR replaced and the new batteries it will be ok. Everything else I checked was ok. Checked all wires and connections. All OK
