I have read the 1999 SD didnt come with a trans cooler large enough to haul large loads. I keep stepping up my trailer size each time I purchase a new one.
Currently I'm towing 9-10k lb. in the western deserts.
My cooler stands 7" by the width of the radiator.
I change tranny fluid quite often and have never had burnt fluid.
My question is should it be larger (cooler)and if so what type and size.
Put a quality transmission temperature guage on first and see what is actually going on. You may not need another cooler. Faze Guage is a quality product and is what I have installed. If your cooler is that tall and wide you may be OK
Yeah, hookup a gauge - it's a MUST when towing heavy.
I believe my '01's tranny cooler is much bigger than 7" tall, more like 12-13 inches, so yeah, I do believe they upgraded to a larger one.
Still, get the gauge first. If it shows above normal temps when towing heavy, get a larger cooler. I'd check junkyards first for '01-up trucks, or aftermarket for a bolt-in replacement.
For my '96 t-bird, I just went to the local Auto Barn and bought a "generic" off-the-shelf variety which works, but doesn't look as good as the stock one in my SD
Ok I am now convinced I need a trans temp gauge on my 2000 F250 V10 4r100 Trans. Anyone know the easiest way to install one? I have tried to search the forums here and have had no luck. Thanks in advance.
i forget which side but there is a 1/8 pipe plug into the trans case that will take a sender ' for get a maghy-tec trans pan the ypipe is in the way of it.
I believe that pipe plug is on the drivers side of the tranny, but im not 100% sure on that. If you are worried about cooling, look into a trans cooler with an auxiliary fan. I installed one on a 96 F250 with a PSD, and we cannot get the trans temp up over 180 or so, no matter what we do. I dont think you will ever have to worry about temps with one of those.

i have to agree with you 100% about the fan forced cooler . as i tryed a mag-hytec pan cutting a $1285.00 y pipe set up and wound up removeing the pan and just useing your type of cooler and the stock pan still run the same temps as with both. 170 degs towing even when i come home from the lake and pull the 25%, 1 .5 mile long grade to my house.
