now for my question. i just recently picked up a 1977 f250 4x4 and was told it is a 1977 1/2. my question is is what is the diffrence between a 77 and a 77 1/2 and how do i tell which one i have?
77 1/2 are a 'lowboy' and ride about 3 inches lower than the 77's- which werre still considered a highboy. look at the rear spring pack, if i remember correctly- the 77 1/2 and later have 3 inch wide springs...
Also a big give away is the married transfercase and the front crosmember is cocked back on the driverside to accomidate a PS box, so the pitman arm runs horizontal not vertical. Oh ya welcome to the site, lots of knowledge running around here.
In my experience, the '77s still had the "narrow" frame (34" wide front to back), and the '77 1/2 used the "wide" frame, which flared out to 37" under the bed. measure the frame width (outside to outside) at the rear of the truck. On the earlier model (highboy), the front spring hangers on the front leaf springs were rivited to the bottom of the frame, and the bumper mounted to a set of brackets that bolted to the side of the frame. The later (lowboy) model, the spring hangers bolted to the side of the frame, and the bumper bolted directly to the frame. These are a couple easy ways to find out without crawling under th truck.
