Man, I gotta say that I'm disappointed here. I thought for sure somebody with a bypass filtration system would have jumped on this to extoll the virtues of those systems and tout some extended change interval. Guess that gives me something to think about too. I have a hard time racking up 5k in a year. I usually force myself to change it at least 2x a year despite that.

I have a bypass, but with just 3000 miles on the bypass and new oil, I don't have much of a word on extended change intervals. I did however just get my first UOA, with the 3000 miles on the oil, back from Blackstone today, and everything looked great. They noted that the insolubles (oil oxidation and soot due to heat, use, and blow-by) were quite low at just 0.3%, which showed good oil filtration. They feel that I could easily run longer oil before an oil change. I also had a TBN done, and it was still at 9.9. This was on Mobil 1 5W40 Truck and SUV oil - not my favorite, but it's what was available when I did my last oil change. I'll get another UOA done in 3000 more miles. That may be more than required, but since it's my first shot at it, I'm curious.

JT, I thought a bypass system was good for at least doubling the service life of oil. Since you're running synthetic I would think it could be more.
On edit: Where's Nut at with his TP system? I've heard good things from those too.

I think it will at least double the service life. But, since it's the first shot at bypass oil filters, I'm taking caution. And, like I said, the oil isn't my favorite. My goal is to hit 7500 miles then switch oils and check the results on that.

I've tested last three oil changes 5000 mi and twice @ 6000 mi. all is good, going to 7000 this mo and 1000 every month after that till I get a report that say's to change it. always changed it at 3000 mi for most of the 149,000 miles that it has. no mod's or harsh driving habits. apx 20,000 of the miles had a by-pass filter system that sounded great untill i got a report back that was bad, oil had 13,000 at testing. no longer trust by pass systems for extended oil changes unless tested every 3000 mi."there's no saving's in that"

Cellulose is the best oil filter known to man. A tightly wound roll of TP is nothing more than high quality cellulose. I stopped draining oil over 40 years ago. The only time I drain oil is if I have some type of problem such as a Leaky head gasket. It has always worked for me. My oldest bypass filter still in use is a Motor Guard M-100. It is over 35 years old and has paid for itself many times over. It is a compressing type filter which means there is very little free oil to spill out. The trick is to use only submicronic bypass filters. Don't waste time with bypass filters that are only a little better than a full flow filter.

Hey Tenn,
Was just on vacation. Like Ralph says the TP filters do the job well. My dual MG-30's keep my oil pretty clean. Going to change rolls today.

There are more TP filters out there than most people think. They all filter about the same. Your engine doesn't know the difference. For marketing reasons some hide the TP in socks or other containers. One filter company says their filter takes a filter cartridge made of densely wound pure conifererous long fiber wood pulp paer. That beats telling people that your filter takes toilet paper. These filter filter as good as TP. It was simpler back when I started using TP filters. The grocery stores were loaded with high quality TP.

What's wrong with black? It is jet black after 500 miles. What I am more worried is the anti foaming agents in the oil. As in whether they are still there or not. Yes, school bus and trucks might see different duty which is the issue here.

my $.02:

TP filters DO keep the crud out, but do nothing for replacing any of the life extending aditives. Then there is the question of sulphur in the fuel becomming sulphuric acid in the crankcase. Oil also oxidizes becomming varnish and sludge, which may or may not become part of the filtering process to keep it out. Then there is the whole arguement about keeping sub-microscopic abrasive materials in suspension that can't be done when the oil is full of OTHER sub-micro's

If you aquire additives and add them frequently then perhaps extended is the way to go.

I myself am a confirmed 3000 mile changer. 22 times @ 65K miles costing about 600.00 so far.

Very good point piotrsko. I am also a member of the frequent oil change club.

UOA's can tell one what's happening with the oil and when to change. If further analysis is needed one can use Dyson Labs for more info.
The additives are replenished when u replace the filter element with make up oil(usually about 1-2qts). Lubecontrol also makes an additive that aids the oil additives in doing their job. My .02 worth.

I have changed my oil at 3500 the first 3 times, then went to 5000 for a couple, since then every 7500 miles. It has always had Rotella 15-40 with filter change each time. Now has 161+k miles on and uses no oil and runs like scalded cat. (that's fairly fast). I also keep Marvel Mystery oil in the fuel every 30 gal/4-5 oz.

Absolutely NO problems in above miles, except for one CMP replaced under warrantyat 80k.

Bypass systems are popular with the OTR guys and marine vessel owners. These folks know how to get motors to last a long time.
