I want to add front and rear swaybars to my '68 F100 2wd. I see from the LMC catalog that they offer both, has anyone added these to their truck and what kind of work to install? I know my truck has no swaybar mounting points on the spring perches so how do they hook up? And has anyone added the steering stabilizer they offer?
Go with the Hellwig for the front it's a 1 1/8" front sway bar it works really good and it's about $125 through summit and it'll take about 45 minutes to install if you have a floor jack
What do the Helwig bars hook up to? I don't seem to have any place to mount the end links or bushings or do you have to drill holes? Mine is a '68 2wd.
I believe Hellwig only admits to the front one working on 73+ but it worked on my 68 just fine, the back one goes right through the shocks and doesn't fit well on the 1/2 ton Dana 60 axle (dont know if it'd work on 9" or not), some of the ribs hit the sway bar but it did bolt up without shocks (removed it now, shocks more fun than sway bar and no shocks) The Front sway bar goes in front of the I-beams, it needs no drilling or anything like that you need the floor jack to compress the rubber bushing on the frame bracket tight enough to slip the metal plate under it. It has a notch that slips around the frame and then a metal plate you put between the notch and the frame with two bolts you tighten to hold it in place. And as you can see headers have no chance of interfering. Summit has both front and back listed as part number HEL-7422 and HEL-7436. HEL-7422 is backordered so I'm assuming it's the front one
Thanks man. Those look cool. So they really help with the sway a lot? Mine has qutie a bit of roll on the corners. Never will be a truck good for the oval track but I would like some better control.
yeah, I had my back sway bar before my front one arrived because they shipped from different locations but when I put the front one on I did notice that the front wasn't as rolled over as it had been going over corners 50mph at a 30mph corner, but I'm using 6 cylinder front springs with a FE instead of V8 Springs and that may lead to a bit more roll
Thanks for the pictures, part numbers, and advice.
Very helpful!
I was just looking at Summit and their on-line catalog is not very detailed. Would you happen to know if that Hellwig Front sway-bar would also fit a 1972 F250?
Thanks!
Sorry I'm late to get back to this one. I've been plodding along with a poly bushing swap and all of the *right parts* finally came in (Yes!).
I guess the key measurement would be space between the frame rails and the width of that lower part of the C-channel of the frame where the sway bar attaches to it and the height/width of the portion of the Twin-I-Beam where the clamp attaches to it.
I appreciate your offer to take the measurements.
Thanks!
Hello!
On June 2 you replied to a sway bar question. In your reply is a pic of an engine compartment. I was hoping you would tell me where you got the air cleaner cover with the two inlets that have the two hoses attached to it!
I have been thinking about trying to fabricate such a set-up. I had figured to cut two holes behind the grill and suck my air in from there.
I hadn't quite figured out how to make the air cleaner shroud like your's. Does it work well for you? Any info about this set-up and where and or how you bought/made it would be most appreciated.
I have a 1968 F100 that has a 390/.030 overbore that uses a 750 Holley atop a Edelbrock Streetmaster. I was hoping to to devise a homebrew "ram air" type system like your's.
Hey thanks!
Rich
I bought mine from http://www.ramairbox.com
have you thought about porting your streetmaster? or going to the performer RPM? it's supposed to make a big difference...
