a/c clutch

now that we have gotten the tranny problem fixed on my brothers 93 aerostar,we want to get the a/c going, the a/c works but the clutch bearing makes lots of noise {a roaring sound} can just the bearing be replaced? if so can i get it a local parts store or do i have to go to ford? or is it best to replaced the clutch/pully/clutch assy? and also when we replace that assy, will the freon leak out? it cools and works decent, but he don't use it because all of the noise. all replies will be appreciated as always!

Yes the clutch bearing is serviceable, changed mine for 11.00. Auto zone will lend puller free. I didn't even remove from truck and a/c charge is not lost.

The job is quite easy, takes about 1 hour. I felt bad because the bearing was 11.00 at NAPA but autozone lent me the puller for free. I shouldn't worry, I must have spent 2000.00 there over the last two years. The bearing was made in China, so you know its good. Been on there over a year now.

Ken, you are lucky the compressor is on top for the 4.0L. With the 3.0L, it's impossible to do that since the compressor is hidden way down there on the passenger side.

I have a '95 Aerostar and the compressor clutch went out this weekend. What do I have to do to replace it. Is it just removing the center bolt and using a puller? Thanks.

Yes on the 4.0 the compressor is super easy. I have replaced this bearing on other cars like camaros. Hopefully removing the fan shroud will make it easier. Like any surgery, accessability is key. Good luck!! Once you have that, the process is fairly straightforward.

There are different clutches out there, if the clutch hub has an internal thread, you remove the center bolt, thread the puller into the internal thread and pull the clutch off the shaft. You now have access to the bearing which is pressed onto the compressor. use a puller to remove and install the new one. Mine had a snap ring that had to be removed first.

Use an appropriate size pipe to tap the new bearing into place and reinstall snap ring. Use the center bolt to reinstall outer part of clutch.

I have seen several different clutches so use your head, but they are all simple and repairable.

Enjoy the quiet cool.

Well, it was the compressor the caused the bearing to fail. Shaft to the compressor was seized.

Hey that's Ok. atleast you know you didn't replace a 200.00 compressor if an 11.00 bearing was the only problem.

Your luck is like mine:never the cheap part that fails, never the easy to reach part that breaks, always the dirty, grimy part that needs replaced, never the clean, shiny ones. Sad to tell you but a failed compressor is known as Black Death. Bits and pieces of its innards are strewn all over the A/C system and have to be flushed out. The only bright spot is the fine mesh screens on the orifice tubes trap the debris, sparing the evaporators. Bad news is the condensor will need flushed thoroughly or the orifice tubes will plug up again. Google "A/C Black Death" for more gruesome details or check the FTE A/C forum for the same.

Hey, I flushed my system. Initial tooling is costly, plus I replaced all the hoses. No need to replace the condensor if it is flushed properly.

Hey ken on which part of the operation when changing the compressor bearing do you use your head, when the bearing wont budge, ie hit it with your head or is it when the pully pop's of the shaft and put's a hole in your radiator and then you bash your head against a brick wall, hahaha just kidding.
