I've had a couple upgraded and re-geard, but have always had that type of work done. I don't think the two diffs are interchangable (but I am not an expert and could very well be wrong), I am pretty sure the components of the 8.8...like the axel shafts are larger and I know that the difrent drive systems for them, such as a locker or a track-lock system are difrent for the two difrent axel sizes, or I should say when you order them they do ask for specific sizes and some parts for an 8.8 are not available for a 7.5 so I assume they are a difrent size or of some difrence in construction as well. I'm sorry I don't know any of the exact part numbers or have any more info or input beyond that.
Appreciate the info. I have been doing some info on ordering what it takes to re-shim the pinion/carrier. It looked like the pinion spacer and shims could be the same. It even looks like the pinion and carrier shims are the same for the GM 7.5 10 bolt also, according to the summit racing catalog.
I just bought this ranger and never worked on a ford rear yet but have done at least 20 gear changes to the GM rears.
This rangers rear is very noisy on the backlash part and needs to be set right.
The shim kit for the 7.5" and 8.8" are one in the same. They use the same bearings, races, axles, etc..
The ONLY case I know of where the 8.8" rear uses a different axle is with some of the Explorers that have the 31 spline axles. Everything else that has either a 7.5" or 8.8" rear end in the Ford lineup uses 28 spline axles, wether it be a Ranger, Mustang, Crown Vic, etc..
The rear was serviced at a dealer before me buying it and they replaced the bearings in the rear is all I was told. Not to bash anyone, but they had the carrier shims reversed giving me .040 backlash. After inspecting and reinstalling, the backlask fell on .007 and the tooth pattern was perfect.
I have done quite a few 7.5 10 bolt GM's, so I had shims laying around. The carriers use the same size shims for both for FYI later down the road. The pinion was good at 15 in lbs of preload turning, so I didnt touch it. I cant answer for the size being the same for GM then.
