Need a hand starting it up please...
460 motor, out of a 60's car apparently.
Its in a 73' F-250 XLT
100% Brand new: Distributer, rotor, plugs, wires, coil, PS Pump/pulley, belts, and fuel pump.
CARB: 2 BRL Motocraft stockish carb on a 4brl manifold (NON EGR) <<---one of the problems.
Ok it seems the manifold is a 4brl manifolt, yet the damn previous owner used a stock 2brl off a 351m it looks like. There was NOTHING hooked up to or from the carb. So i ran the brake booster, the line from the Distributer and another unknown line off the back off the manifold. Everything else has been plugged. The damn heat riser hard lines off the side of the man9ifold have BOLTS threaded into them by the last owner as well that he used to seal it.
Yea i know, not the best platform to begin working on. However i have the motor at TDC (vefified on the pulley markings, and had pressure on #1 cyl). I put the distributer in and lined the rotor up with the #1 plug.
Now when i try to fire up the truck it just turns and turns. Its getting fuel because if i give it a bit of gas it will POP (and once threw a big ole fireball out of the top of the carb!)
Ive verified its getting fuel into the carb and thence into the cylinders, but the damn thing will not start up. The longest time ive had it up was it managed to run for about a full minute, with a REALLY low jumpy idle and popping out the pipe. When i then tried to give it a bit of advance it just fell flat on its face.
Ideas? Suggestions? Or mayhaps i should post some pictures of how everything is run, and perhaps the problem lies there? This truck was SERRIOUSLY neglected and ghetto rigged by the last owner, and im trying my best to restore it, but its hard when alot of things are just flat out missing entirely leaving me no idea i needed it in the first place.
*Smacks self*
Its good on the compression, and it was running (Poorly!) before. It would just choke out randomly under load when driving down the road, then when i stopped for a minute it would pick back up and let me go on my way.
I pulled it somewhat apart to replace the gaskets on the intake manifold and carb since they seemed to be leaking. All bolts were torqued down in order and by torque according to the haynes motor rebuild guide for the ford motor.
Next as others have suggested check your firing order it should be 1, 5, 4, 2, 6, 3, 7, 8. and should be in a couter clockwise rotation on the dist cap. cylinders on a ford are numbered 1-4 on the passenger side, and 5-8 drivers side. just to double check.

After you check the timing and fiering order I would check all the fule filters. I am allso thinking you might have a vacum leak you didn't get pluged.
You might try spraying a little carb cleaner in the carb when you are trying to start it ( I like berreymans for this) if you get it runing try advancing the timing a little and see if it runs better. I think I would put a carb and intake on my wish list.
Good luck
Bill
