If you want to know who REALLY controls the price of oil, try these guys:
New York Mercantile Exchange
World Financial Center
One North End Avenue
New York, NY 10282-1101

Dennis,

up here in Canada, the government has the monopoly. People whine and complain to the government about fuel prices, and the government feeds them the same line, "we're trying to lower the prices." BULL. The government is never going to lower fuel prices because of the tax they collect. The government are the only institution in Canada allowed to collect tax on a tax. For arguements sake, lets say the purchase price of gas is $.1 per litre, and lets say the govt. collects 3 taxes at 10% each. As we all know, that would be 3 cents, and result in a price of .13/L. However, thats not how the gas tax works. The govt charges 10% on the original price of $.1, so thats $.11. Then charge 10% to the new price of $.11, so thats $.121, then taxes the $.121 for 10%, resulting in a price of $.1331 per litre.

At $1 per litre the Canadian government breaks down the fuel price as follows: (http://www.fin.gc.ca/toce/2005/gas_tax-e.html)

purchase price of crude - 49.5 cents
Refiner costs - 14
Federal taxes - 10.5
Provincial taxes - 16.5
GST - 6.5
Retailer - 3.5

That's a grand total of 33 cents per litre is tax!!

Later in the article, it claims that as a percentage of the price of fuel, Canadians pay the second lowest rate, behind the USA. It shows that we pay 78 cents in production fees/profits/etc. and 32 cents in tax. The UK pays 70 cents production fees/profits/etc. and 1.31 in tax. SO WHY CAN THEY BUY IT 8 CENTS CHEAPER BEFORE TAXATION THAT WE CAN?!?!?!?!?!?!

I hope this opens peoples eyes to who is really to blame to for our ridicousily high gas prices.

Trevor

okst1 quote:"If you want to know who REALLY controls the price of oil, try these guys:

Who's declaring the billions of dollars Quarterly PROFITS?
Who's paying off golden parachutes in excess of $400 million dollars?
Who has stopped Ford and GM's best selling products in their tracks?
Remember, the gas we are buying today was pumped out of the ground 90 days ago, and yet we pay today's crude price.

Agree'd the States and Feds take a share of the gas price in road taxes, but at least they return a large portion of that tax we paid in better roads for us to ride on and use on a daily basis. What highway has Exon/Mobile built? or even patched?

I repeat websthes:

"OPEC is the oil cartel

oil execs control USA"

That folks is the simple truth.

I think the higher prices are inevitable, given the global demand, etc, etc -- it's all been hashed out before.

However, I visited the parents-in-law this weekend in Abilene, KS. Most places were selling for around $2.67. Two places in town were heavily competing with each other and they were down to $2.44 or so. It CAN be sold cheaper.
