I just did this, works great on 58 F100; however, ford PS pump aerates itself after 10 miniutes. It is not aleak. The filter inside was bad, could not get anew one, so we added an auto trans filter in return line. I suspect that odd filter setup inside Ford PS Y block pumps of this vinatge may also be an air trap/deairing deal? I say odd, as the return oil goes into the middle of the filter and out to the outside, say the opposite of an air cleaner. I found a ford tarctor filter, a little wider, but seems to fit; going to try that. Anyone know the secret on these punps re Air?/ Runs hot as hell too. But the air may be part of that...
Hey All,
I'm using the gear box, reserve and pump that all went together as a system on a Toyota. All work great.
The one thing that the original Toyota system has is a metal line incorporated with the hoses that helps to dissapate the heat. You could use any correct size metal line as a cooling coil for your truck.
By using the Toyota pump I think it helps with areation due to correct pressure for the gear box, I have not noticed any foaming with mine.
Also, when I initially added fluid, I slowly turned the steering back and forth(lock to lock) to help get the fluid into the entire system and force air out to the reserve. Less traped air means less agitation and bubbles.
New stuff on old trucks...trial and error is the only way I know.
