thanks beemer nut, for all the help. the guy that is going to put it all in found some really good headers that won't fry the starter, and will also fit my rig.
buying headers that are ceramic coated or having them coated really cuts down on the heat. i was amazed at the difference. i have coated hedmans and 2.5" pipes.
If your headers are new get them ceramic coated inside and out to cut engine compartment heat as well extend header life. Ceramic will keep the gases at a high exit velocity for better scavenging. Go HPC as Jet-Hot does crappy work, redone twice and still rusty until HPC stripped and recoated.

well, tomarrow im going to see the guy thats putting them in to see what he came up with. so i will let you know tomarrow about what he found and what i am going to do.
Check the flanges for flatness and ports free of welds and splatter, if they're raw dress sharp edges your hands will appreciate it.
Use anti-seize on the header bolts.

i will tell him that, although i think would know to do that because he does it for a living. anyway what he is going to put on for me is some doug thorley headers(ceramic coated) which he says are really really good headers and they won't fry the starter. and then 2.5" duals out the back. i need to call him tomarrow and tell him wheather i want the flowmaster or glasspacks, he says that the flowmaster will perform better, but i don't know which one i want. any sugestions?
Check into www.broaderperformancel.com and look at the muffler flows in CFM's. I had Flows given to me from my muffler shop friend, they ended up in the garbage can, they don't sound and flow worth a damn but high schools kids think they're great.

the site was a good place to look at, they didn't have flows that the guy wanted me to put on thou. what the guy wanted to put on was a dual in, dual out, with all 2.5" pipes. I HATE CHOICES!!!!
You talking single muffler dual in/out, that sucks unless you have a fuel tank inside the frame rails. That 2 /1/2" is big as you'll ever need as well the collector stub extensions are 2 1/2". If you go glass packs get the ones with a perforated liner not the louvered as louvered choke up the higher the exhaust flow gets like under full throttle.
Check other muffler shops for ideas, different muffler brands as well prices.
If you have the time and equipment it's a fun project to build your own system, I did plus it gets noticed a lot as I hang out at a friends muffler shop.

yeah thats the problem, is the extra gas tank so he can't fit two mufflers. and he has already started putting the flowmaster in. i really like the sound that my uncle's truck makes because of the flowmasters on it, so i was hoping the same sound if not close to. this is worst decision that i have had to make in a long time. like i said before, I HATE CHOICES!!!
One member on this forum had two mufflers set vertical on the right side because or the frame tank on the left, just had to route the left pipe over to the right, that shoots the equal length exhaust system all to hell.
I have 3 tanks, cab and 2 saddle outside the frame so it was easy even with the X cross over. You are going to add a X cross or the minimum a H pipe. H pipe sucks as far as helping scavenging, exhaust gas at high velocity will not make two 90 degree turns just shear.
Sound alone isn't everything, you want a performance exhaust system not something to impress high school kids, they like Flowmasters.
Look under Dr.Gas or better yet BurnsStainless as they build Indy and Formula 1 motor exhausts besides serious drag cars.
As far as sound different motors by manufacture, cams, compression as well exhaust pipe length will change "That Flowmaster sound".

no, what does the X and H do for you exactly? i have seen them but don't understand why they are used. the preformance part is why i picked the flows, im just afraid that it is going to sound horrible. im not picky when it comes sound, i just don't want it to sound bad.
The H pipe will help with low end toruqe and lowerer the Db's of the exhaust sound, the X pipe will do the same plus help scavenage the opposite bank of cylinders to help pull in more fuel/air during cam overlap, venturi action, basic gas laws. I ran across a article where SpinTech's were installed vertical as your installation with dual tips out the right side.
On what people want with FlowMasters ( crap in my book, sorry) there are knockoffs that fall apart and muffler shops pocket the Flowmaster's asking price but sell knockoffs. With over $2,000 in mufflers I got free to test from my friendly muffler shop plus how sensitive FE motors are to back pressure I ended up with a home made exhaust and X cross with SpinTech mufflers. No i'm not a sales person for SpinTech's, just what works for me.

Check with the muffler manufacture in question, they should tell you the CFM's of the muffler you want to know about. Some off brand cheapo may flow better than a high dollar brand name.
