On my 92 F250, my brake lights come on real late. If I want them to come on at all when braking, I have to wait five feet before the stop and hit them hard. The switch doesn't look adjustable to me. Is their a way to adjust it, or is it just worn out? Thanks for any input.
I've never heard of that one before! Hey look on the bright side, if you get rear ended by someone, they can't say your brake lights weren't on because they will turn on eventually!. I guess that'd be good if you wanted a new bumper and possibly a tailgate!
In all seriousness, shoot the switch with a little WD40. If that doesn't work, replace the switch. Apparrently the contactors inside the switch are worn out.
Yup. That is what I mean. I know mine are not supposed to be this way. Say the stopsign is at the top of a hill and all I need is light braking, they will never go on. They only go on for a heavy application of the brakes. That can't be right.
Replace the brake switch, all of the switches that I know of activate at the top of the stroke.
There are some hydraulic switches that activate on brake fluid pressure but are not found much anymore.
Some of the F250 and F350's have the brake lights actuated by the brake system rather than the pedal opening a normally closed switch mounted above the brake pedal. My crewcab (F350) had the same problem, and someone rear ended me because of it a few years back. Anyway, the solution (for me) was to install a microswitch on a metal bracket, which when the brake pedal is up, it opens the switch (it's a normally closed switch). When you move the pedal 1/8" down, the switch closes and the brake lights go on immediately, even though the calipers/drums aren't doing squat yet.
The switch came from mouser.com or digikey.com, it was like $3.
I'm glad I dont have that problem. The only problem with mine is... if you BARELY apply the brake, they will "flicker" on and off until you press on them a little harder. By BARELY I mean just leaning your foot against the brake pedal.
Quicklook- trust me, if I lean my foot on the brake pedal, I get asked bout it if the car following me goes to the same place I do. People ask me if I'm a 2 footed driver because my brake lights flicker. I tell em "Sometimes!"
