i have a 89 clubwagonwith a 351.... when i hook my battery up ....my check engine light and emergency brake both come on without the key in the ignition...i think this has drained my old battery...put a new battery on and problem persisits...when hooked the brand new battery up in the van. the battery charge meter stays on the negative side......Any Idea'sHelp????
Man you got a short in the charging system. Check all your connections to the starter, also the charging from the alternator. Fact that the lights are lit up in the dash says to me that it might be worse than just these two systems though.
Pull those codes and it might give you something as well.
I would not put a scanner onto the van until the basic electrical problem is solved if you like your scanner.
First make sure you do not have a short by removing the (-) battery terminal and putting a test lamp between (-) battery and the (-) cable. If it lights bright, you have a short.
I would hazard a guess that you might have an ign switch or ign cyl problem. I would go with the easy to replace ign cyl. first.
