I'll confuse matters some more. The part number on my NOS FoMoCo boxes is 6A-1130-A. My 1953 Ford Chassis Parts catalog has a listing matching this number with a description of "Rustless steel". It also lists part number 6A-1130-AZ8 with the description "Copper chrome varnish". I'm guessing these are the painted caps. It looks to me like the stainless caps were a legitimate option in 1953.
