rearend troubles

Anyone ever had rearend work done before? I have a 98 ranger 2.5 automatic with 161,000 miles on it. I was driving to town today going about 55 mph when I started hearing a roaring noise coming from the rearend. I didn't pay much attention to it, but as the day goes on it gets louder and louder. So I got on the interstate and got up to 70 and let off the gas and the best way I can describe it is that it sounded like a jet engine was underneath my truck and then it started rattling. I know that sounds strange but that's what it was like. I took it to a shop and they looked at it and said it was probably a carrier or pinion bearing. I asked them for a estimate and they said it was hard to say. Does this sound like what the problem could be and if this is the problem how much money are we talking about here? I appreciate any questions or comments you may have. Thanks.

I had a similar issue with my 95 wrangler. Ended up needing new bearings in the rear end and a new ring and pinion to the tune of $1300..

Check out a junk yard though, may be able to find a whole rear end for less than that.

Keep us posted.

Ranger rear ends are dime a dozen in the bone yards. Installation is very straight forward. Look on car-part.com for prices of used rear ends. I concur with the preliminary diagnosis; I just dont see paying for them to rebuild what can be replace for much less.

Great time to upgrade to an 8.8 (and traction-lock, too) from a 4.0L Ranger. Sounds like the rear is having bearing problems for sure.

Better yet, grab a rear-end off a '97 + Ford Explorer that has rear-disc breaks, and a locker.. The only thing you need to do is re-weld the spring perches in the correct position, and grab the brake master cylinder off the Explorer as well and put it in your Ranger.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I was thinking, I have a old junk 86 ranger with the 2.3 and manual tranny that has been wrecked. Would the rearend from it fit into my 98? If so that would save alot of money. Anyways, thanks for all the help.

The 86 ranger is a no go. It was hauled off to a junkyard last week. I guess I will be junkyard diving now.

It wouldn't have worked anyway, the '86 rear axle didn't have the provision for the Vehicle Speed Sensor, vital to the functioning of your truck. May have also had issues with ABS.

locker ? i dont think so, also shock mounts and you mite not need the master cylinder, if you get an 8.8 out of an Fx4 u will get the 31 spline and torsen(direct swap)
