Hi. I have a 1989 F150 XLT Lariat with a 5,8 liter (351) engine. I have bought and need to replace the speed sensor but do not know where it is located. Do I have to remove the tranny pan to get at it or is it somewhere that I can access it externally?
Since you didn't say I am going to assume you have a 4x2 so the speedsensor should be in the transmision. To find it you should look for a cable coming through the floor near the pedals and going back to the transmission. It should be on the right side neer the end of the transmission and just before the output shaft and U Joint.
This conects to the speedsensor which has one bolt that holds it in place. To get it out pull off the speedometer cable, remove the bolt, and simply pull it out.
Turning the assembly as you pull tends to make it easier.
I just woke up and relized I said it was on the right side but that is all wrong it is definitly on the left Side, Drivers Side. I don't know why I said right side. Oh well hope this hasn't sent you on a wild goose chase.
It depends on what you mean by speed sensor. There's really only one speed sensor, the VSS in the rear axle. The one in the t-case or tranny tailhousing on the driver's side is for the mechanically driven speedo and really isn't a sensor at all.
The cruise control (and ECU) on these year trucks use a VSS mounted in-line with the speedo cable. The rear end sensor is only used by the ABS computer on an 89.
Far as I know it is called a VSS. That is what the computer pins are labeled that go to it. I think the rear end sensor is called a VSS in the 92 and up trucks; not sure if that's still the name of it in the 91 and older trucks as well.
