Are there any number stamped on the spring to ID them.If so does any body know what they are? I went to my local 4-wheel drive store ask if he had any used V Code fronts and B code backs. He looked at me like i had a third eye. Any help would be appreciated
Excellent question with apparently no easy answer.
From what I hear, there are no id numbers on springs that make sense. The only identifier is on the vehicle itself--assuming they have not been changed by someone else first. Try to find springs still on the truck before removal for a "lift kit" or similar at a spring shop. If the springs have not been changed previously (lift kit, etc.), then most F-250 / F-350 SRW should be V,B code (front, rear). Some, however have upgraded to "X" code front to handle snow plows.
The only other way to identify comes from the number of leaves and the overall height (thickness) of the spring pack. I don't know that information, but I bet someone reading this can supply.
You can learn most of what there is to know by going up a level in this forum. If you go to the Superduty forum there is a sticky about decoding your VIN and FAQ's, as you scoll down in that permanent posting you will find two more posts on spring codesafter the VIN stuff. The problem with picking the U's or V's out of a pile is that they both have two leaves and measure almost the same in thickness. It's the arch and temper that make them something like two hundred or so pounds different in capacity and rate. With the rears you are a little better off. Most of the 250's and practically all of the 350's came with B codes. The post I mentioned gives the number of leafs and thickness at the pad. But Ford had to screw it up and some of their charts give different values than others .
I broke down and bought from dealer. About $300.00 and axle!!! Then as always happens I was visiting with a buddy that ranches north of me about my suspension mods and he said "come out to the barn". Sure enough sitting in the corner was a set of springs from a lift he had helped his neighbor put on an F350. DRAT!! And no they aren't still there. I have a friend that I let have them. Well, I have made him pay for lunch twice a week ever since .
