2001 Exursion XLTNeed some help, front drivers side windshield wiper not working, would go up 1/2 way and stop, now doesn't go up at all and is loose on "post" of motor. Any ideas how to repair?
I think I'm going to have to get a new motor. I took the wiper arm off, and the gear it sits on is loose on the shaft. It moves freely, I put the wiper blade back on and could move it up an down the window without the motor on.
Anyone got instructions on how to change the motor, or is there a way to change that gear? Any ideas would be helpful... thanks.
Sounds like it is just either loose on the shaft or the shaft is stripped. Just pull the arm off and check the splines. Both arms work off the same motor, if one is working the motor is good.
Good to know about not being motor. How do I fix if loose on shaft? Is there a set screw that holds it on the shaft? If shaft stripped, do I need to buy a whole new shaft assy.
You should just lift up the arm off the windshield a little bit while pulling out the little tab by the shaft, you can't miss it. Once you pull up enough the tab will pop all the way out, then rest the arm down on it, then pull the arm off, simple. These are designed to strip out the splines on the arm first before they would strip the shaft coming out of the hood.
Ok, I can get the arm off the shaft, I can take the "gear" that is on the shaft coming out of the hood and move it by hand, moving it around so the cotter key location where the arm fits on moves around the shaft. Is this normal?
I think the first thing I'll do is try a new arm to see if that fixes the problem. All I know is I don't want to take it to the dealer.. that would break me...
I don't think it's normal, take the shround off right there and take a look at your linkages, one may have come off. If you can move the gear with your hand, it's not connected to the motor.
I took the shroud off and turned on wipers everything was moving and looked normal. To move the "gear" I have to pull up on it or push down on it and it will move on the shaft... so not sure what I would have to replace if this is bad. Probably the shaft assy that the linkages's hook up to? Will go home for lunch and check it out some more to see if I can figure it out. One thing I found out is don't let the cotter key fall down under the shroud.. what a pain....
The new arm didn't fix the problem, I had to buy a new windshield wiper linkage assy. Anyone ever put one of these in? And if so anything special I need to know. It looks like there only 3 bolts on each end of this to put in but I know it will be harder to do than that.
Never done it before. I could have told you you didn't need a new arm. If when you pull the shaft up or push it down and it works, the problem is in the linkage.
