Are using the original harness? An easy fix would be to run a new wire from the fornt marker to the rear. Electrical can be such a pain. Look for broken wires, or crappy grounds.

There are only three wires used for tail lights. Two for brake/signal, one for each side and a common tail.

I was interested in the two wires going to each side. I am wondering if one of those is your tail light.

You could try using a test light to verify what each wire does and also make sure that you have a good ground. I had a similar problem with a 66 Chevy truck and it turned out that I had a bad ground. Like you, I almost lost what little sanity I have left.

I recently replaced my bulb sockets and they only had two wires. One was for the running lights and the other was for the brake/turn signals. They rely on the socket being grouned properly for it to work. My new sockets had a terminal for a ground wire so I hooked it up and my lights look a lot better.

Good luck
