Log house questions

I'm looking at a log house and I've got a few questions that maybe someone can answer:

*What stain/sealer is applied to them?
*How long can I expect the stain/sealer to last (a quality brand)?
*Do they require frequent maintenance to keep the sealing between logs in good order?
*Are they overly vulnerable to pest problems? Not just carpenter ants and termites, but spiders and other nusance pests. Rodents?
*Compared to a reasonably well insulated stick built home, are log homes energy pigs to heat and air condition?

There was a thread in here not too long ago about log houses. Try a search?

Whether it means anything or not, Back in the 80's after working for a Lumber/Concrete company for 23 years and doing numerous years of research I was going to have a Log House built for myself.

Regarding all those concerns, I found out at that time my concerns were quickly negated as the products these companies used addressed them all into the most positive light.

I would think they have come even farther with technology.

I was in a Log House in Sept and it was very well built and very efficient spring thru winter.

I wouldn't hesitate to live in one anytime.
