I recently put a set of hooker headers on my 1991 f150 with the 302. They look and perform great. However twice now the header gaskets have blown out. I used felpro and mr gasket I think. Im very frustrated now. Everything was torqed perfectly. I just want a good set that wont blow out. Anybody elese know what I should use? I saw some copper ones at the parts store are they any good (they cost like $45)? I dont care how much they are as long as they dont blow out anmore. Any help is greatly appreciated!!! Thanks
Are your gaskets blowing because the header bolts are backing out? Like j&bsuv said, it's important to get the gaskets "seated" properly by tightening them again after the motor has run a little while. I then check my header bolts periodically and retighten them. I've never used them but I think Stage 8 makes header bolts that have a lock system so they can't back out.
I went back and retightened them once. It took a litlle longer that time for one to blow out. Im relly wondering if I can get a good gasket that will hold up better. Thanks for the help so far.
Go copper, I would only use copper gaskets if you have headers..... If you are going to make the investment of owning headers you might as well buy some good quality gaskets such as the $50.00 copper gaskets! Just my IMOP...
ditto on the copper, but mr. gasket (not the paper ones) should be okay, too. Stay away from all paper gaskets as they will NEVER last. Locking bolts should help. I've never had them blow out on my truck. I've also never gotten a 100% seal. Maybe about 95%.
