Slow blinker when I brake

I'm hoping this is nothing more than a faulty flasher. I have a '79 F150. When I turn my blinker on (left or right), it flashes normally until I press the brake pedal. When I press the brake with the flasher on, the flasher becomes weak and slows down to about half the speed of what it should be flashing. Does this sound like a bad flasher to y'all?

It sounds like its either a bad flasher or a bad ground somewhere. I would start by replacing the flasher since that is cheap and easy. If that doesn't work, start checking your connections inside of the taillights.

Thanks for the input. I hope it's something as simple as the flasher. I'll try it first obviously and go from there. Thanks again.

The slow flash is usually indicative of a greater than normal load. Since it slows when the brake lights come on, my guess is that the brake light ground is bad.

I believe you're right

I tried replacing the flasher...afterall, it is the easiest and cheapest solution. I didn't fix the problem though. I believe I have a wiring problem in the tail lights. The PO installed a heavy bumper with brake/flasher lights built into it. They did a horrible job when wiring it. They simply tied wires together and didn't bother taping, soldering, etc...They left them all exposed. Willing to bet my problem lies somewhere in their wiring.

I would bet that you have a short between the turn and brake circuits, could be as simple as a broken filament in a bulb. if not it is down and dirty to clean up the messy wiring

Could also be corrosion in the bulb sockets; might as well check that while you're fixing the wiring.

That's definitely part of your problem. Make sure you cut the wires back to shiny copper when you redo them. The dull looking strands of wire will not make a good connection. Your best bet is to go to radio shack and get a cheap soldering iron and some solder to connect the wires together.

Oh, yes...I'm a big believer in soldering instead of crimping. Thanks for the advice.
