My explorer has no engin braking even with O/D off or in 1st and 2nd I had the transmission in for repairs and $3,000 later it is worse 2nd and 3rd engage with a lot of slip. When I engage O/D it is better but still no engine braking. I bought the repair kit for the 5r55e transmission to do it my self and an ATSG manual and now I need a T97-70010-AH tool to align the TR sensor, that I have a hard time finding.
Will replacing all the clutches/bands/filters and oil solve the problem or should the torque converter also be serviced or replaced?<O></O>
If you paid that much money and it is worse, I hope you got your money back
The symptom you describe seems to point to a sprag or spall (hardware) not working, there was a good writeup on rebuilding A4LD's, 4R55E and 4R55E. do a serch for it, I will look in my DB and see if I can locate it
My '99 5R55E lost its engine braking right after the 35,000 mile warranty was up so I did nothing about it. I now have 98,000 on the transmission and it still seems to work fine. Hope I'm not being too foolish!
I am not sure how engaging or disengaging the OD makes a difference to the slip in the 2nd or 3rd gears. I was under the impression, and I know this to be the case for my 97 w/ the 4R70W, that disengaging the OD just keeps the transmission from using the top gear (it might also delay shift points up and make them sooner down, not sure on that one). That being the case the slip in 2nd, in particular, should be no different. Am I missing something?
Usually when a 5R55E has no compression braking it's because the valve body gaskets are leaking. There's TSB 03-22-10 from Ford on the problem. Basically you replace the valve body seperator plate or gaskets, depending on the year, with new updated parts.
You can align the TRS without the special tool. On the TRS there are lines that are supposed to be lined up with the transmission in neutral. When you have them lined up tighten the screws and you're good to go.
Hey, you should be getting better fuel mileage. Running off compression wastes gas....and wastes brake pads.
Some cars in the 30's had what they called "freewheeling"...you pushed in a lever and it would coast at idle when you let off the gas.
I got a Tristar service kit with the 2 gaskets and the Ford agents have a kit with the 2 gaskets and plate for $52 (1L5Z-7Z490-CA). What would you suggest?
As for the TR sensor tool you've saved me lots of time.
Thank you.
These are some of the error codes I got P0732,P0733,P0734,P0735(2nd-5th gear ratio error and P1762(Transm. O/D bad off)
The TSB says that the plate and gaskets have to be replaced at the same time to cure the problem. I'm not sure what they actually changed but apparently if you just use the new gaskets with the old plate you'll cause more problems.
I'd have to assume that the Tristar gaskets are made to work with the old plate but I don't know for sure.
Do you still get the same codes with the new TRS?
The new gasket set (part no. 1L5Z7Z490CA) for the main control valve body, the metal gasket does not have a hole for the EPC limit relief valve and spring. Was this a upgrade or change on the 5r55e transmissions. The paper gaskets are the same as the old paper gaskets.
