What would I need to do to put a 460 in my truck that has a 400 in it? Would the headers from the 400 work on the 460? Is this a good idea? which is a better engine for making powerful?
Nope the headers wont work ! Both these engines are good bases for hp,I personaly like the torque of the big block,Now then automatic or four speed? four speed you'll need a set of motor mounts, flywheel and clutch a 390 pilot bearing use the bearing not the bushing actualy there a combo bushing and bearing, measure the inside of the 429/460 crank and have the bearing turned down to fit snuggly into the crank the reason you need to do this is the crank on a 400/351 is a about a 1/2 inch shorter so in doing this the pilot shaft on the trans just goes into the crank a little further I have done this many times and it has caused me zero problems. If you want headers use the best you can! to keep you from having problems with leaky headers later, cheap headers thin flanges = leaks=sevear agrivation !!!Now then I use L+L motor mounts just bolt them up and slide her in if you can find one use a 460 out of a pickup save's alot of hassle's trying to find the right pulley's brackets and so forth also has the right exaust manifolds if you choose to use them what ever you do DONT USE A CAR MANIFOLD ON THE RIGHT SIDE AND CUT THE FRAME TO MAKE IT FIT THE FORD GODS WILL SMITE YOU FOR THAT ONE!!!!! it's not a smart thing to do.and If you cant find a pickup donor the simplest way is buy the parts from L+L save's alot of hassle trying to find parts take it from someone who has done over a dozen of these swaps unless you have a good supplyer of cheap parts to use, your money ahead to buy the right one's first!! also you can use a 390 flywheel if you can not find a 460

Reason: forgot to add something
nope! ring gear and a 460 tourqe conerter and your done. also on the motor you'll need a rear sump oil pan and sump tube and oil pump for either trans sorry forgot to put that in
So take the stock 460 ring gear? (they sometimes come with the engine at the yards, long-block purchase) And stock converter for 460... So I guess the 351M/400 converter is different in physical size?
curiouse? i just recently swapped from 400 to 460 in a 77 F250. I don't recall being told i needed a stock converter from a 460. I thought the C 6 from a 400 would be a direct bolt in to the 460. Just needed to change the flexplate or flywheel. Can anyone clarify?
Someone in another forum (Yahoo site) is doing this. He has a binding problem keeping the engine from turning over. He used the transmission and converter from the old 400 that he had previously. He said he spaced the converter from the block 1/2 inch and now it turns freely??? I wouldn't want to see a large space around my bell, personally...
