I have read dozens of similar posts but want to be sure I am attempting the correct repair for my specific problem... '98 Explorer XLT... My AC only cools on the MAX AC position. Everything else blows warm air (regular AC, vent, defrost, and of course heat.) The thermostat does nothing to control the temperature, it's either cold on MAX AC or hot with HEAT. I'm willing to live with the problem, but I'd like to at least get the vents to let in outside air that's not hot, and I'd like to have the defrost blow cool air. Can you direct me to a link with the proper repair instructions??? Steve
The Exploder has a vacuum operated coolant diverter valve that cuts off coolant flow in MAX A/C so there can be no warming of the air passing through the plenem and the heater core. In any other position, this valve is opened and heat is available, if needed.
It sounds like your first problem is a loss of control of the heater blend door. Check fuse F10 in the I/P fusebox. It supplies the operating power to the blend door motor. If the fuse is good, then there is an electrical problem with either the control or the blend door actuator/blend door. This assumes your temp **** is not stripped and the shaft of the control is actually turning.
As a stopgap, you can probably locate the diverter valve (it will be located on the heater hoses under the hood) and tee in manifold vacuum to cut off coolant flow for the hot summer or until you fix the blend door/controls.
All this assumes you have the manual, not automatic climate control system.
