Let us know what happens. I would say if you could mount it in front of the radiator, then it is deffinately worth a shot. Your other option would be going to a two-cooler setup. I have seen this on some 4x4's. However, I don't think I would go that route unless I had absolutely no other options.

Did another towing test run, 210F at 50mph in 3rd one way, 205F at 45mph in second with a head wind the other way.

I gave up on the notion of R&R'ing the A/C. So I'm now running the trans fluid into the radiator cooler, then into the stock A/C condensor. So far so good. 160F max running 65-70 on my test drive. I'll do a towing run this weekend probably.

Just looking at your signature ... 2.75 gears. You're going to get a lot of slippage/heat with that ratio, especially with any kind of towing. The C6 has no lockup.

Did you check your sending unit as Piffery suggested?

What are you towing?????

21' bayliner classic. A fiberglass, deep-v hull, 130HP inboard/outboard monster. Weighs about 3000lbs on the trailer. Probably about the towing limit for my '77 if I had to guess.

I thought I had confirmed the temperature. I'll be towing again tomorrow. I'll take my IR thermometer and check it again.

Got the second test run in with the A/C unit as a tranny cooler. Towing the 3000lb boat at 60mph, 'cause faster would be stupid with 70's era 1/2 ton brakes, the transmission held 210F reliably. When I slowed down in town it dropped to 180F. The gauge read 180F when I parked and I pulled out the IR thermometer and measured the cooler tube going into the A/C unit to be 172F. I figure that to mean the gauge and IR thermometer agree considering the IR reading is 6' from the transmission and in the airstream. So it's appears I can now tow without overheating the tranny or fluid.

Is the cooler still mounted in the same place, or did you move it?

The fluid runs into the stock radiator cooler, then into the A/C condensor. The A/C condensor is in the stock location, except flipped side to side so the ports are on the passendger side for easier plumbing.
