Bought a 2001 F-250 5.4 in January and she has run perfectly until recently. Have noticed a bit of smoke coming from the tailpipe at startup - nothing terribly noticeable until yesterday. Started it after a 80 mile trip and about a 6 hour shutdown and it looked like I was fogging for mosquitoes. Have noticed a little more oil being used as well.
Is this a common problem? Any places to start looking for a fix? Any suggestions at all?
Check the PCV system and make sure it's not sucking oil.
My V10 has this annoying thing: Start engine, move a few feet, total running time less than 30 seconds. Shutdown. Wait 'til next day, startup - POOF! out the tailpipe.
Never figured out what it is, and many others have the same problem with the V10, but no oil usage, no problems whatsoever.

My 5.4L has done this a couple of times. It is a rich condition on start-up for a second. Uses no oil and runs great.

Does it make a loud WHOOF! when it does it?
On mine, sounds like the IAC is wide open when it does this. Come to think of it, I've never tried just leaving the key on for a few seconds, and THEN cranking it. I just go right through RUN and tap START. Gotta try that when I get the chance.
No WOOOF, just a little smoke after a 30sec start-up then let it sit till in the morning. Maybe turning it off in the full rich cycle leaves a little fuel in the cylinders. I too always go straight to start from off, myself.
