i was wondering what kind of fuel mileage i could expect to get with a f250 7.3 4x4 ext cab and a 6.0 and what has more power? the 7.3 or 6.0 and what is the better motor of them?? and how many miles is a lot on a ford deisel?
I am far from an expert on this but the general advice given on these forums is stay away from 2003 and 2004 6.0. 2005 and 2006 are supposed to be ok (I sure hope so, I just bought one!). 6.0 has more HP and torque but both have plenty of each for most applications. Milage varies but they are not far apart apples to apples. There are much more knowlegable people on these forums - I haven't even picked up my truck yet. I know 2 guys well that have 6.0 PSD and one with 7.3. All are very happy with their trucks. I have no idea how long these motors will last. The 7.3 guy has 230,000 on his with no problems(on motor). One 6.0 guy has just over 100,000 with only a pvc valve replacement. The other one has 40,000 with no problems at all. Both of the 6.0 are early ones from 2003. Still I would stay away. Talk is when they are bad, they are really really bad. Milage should be mid to high teens in mixed highway and city driving. maybe 20 or so highway. Can't count on that though, not everyone gets as good (some get a little better)

I've had a 2000 7.3 L , a 2003 6.0L and now a 2006 6.0L I put about 80,000 miles on each truck. Bought them new and hauled the same trailers etc.
My 6.0L have more power. My 7.3 had a 60hp chip and exhaust. My 6.0L have been stock. My 7.3L got better mileage towing my gooseneck horse trailer on the freeway. My 6.0L trucks get better mpg running empty.
With my new 2006 truck, I've been playing with it's mileage for the past month.
I average 14 mpg daily driving. 700 mile hiway trip (Northern UT to Southern UT) got 18mpg at 75mph. Pulling my 12,000 Gooseneck horsetrailer 700 miles weekend and got 12 mpg. One tank around town. Took all the back roads and never got over 40mph. Rolled through as many stops signs as I dared, started costing a long way before any stop sign, Drove like I had an egg under the accelerator, and would have pissed off anybody following me for being so slow and I got 22 mpg.
So the same truck shows a huge variance depending on how I drive it.
