Removing 2.9 from engine compartment?

What would you say is the best way to remove the 2.9L? I'm swapping a 4.0 and need this out. I know I'll need a cherry picker/engine hoist to get it out, but how do I go about doing that? Take off the hood? What do I bolt to? Is it even possible to get it out without a hoist?

1) Take Pictures
2) Drain all Fluids
3) Disconnect all Lines, Hoses & Wires
4) Remove Radiator
5) Unbolt Engine mounting bolts (one on each side running vertical through the mount)
6) Unbolt and disengage transmission
7) Remove Hood
8) Attach chain to a bellhousing mount hole on rear of engine and then and attach to a similar strength hole diagonally in the front.
9) Take one last look at everything to make sure everything is unhooked and clear.
10) Pull engine and enjoy the mess

Just a couple side notes, you probably won’t get all the antifreeze out of the engine so when you’re moving the engine around afterwards just watch out for extra fluid. Also I just rented a real nice hoist at Just-ask-Rental for $20. I was going to buy but don’t have the room for one yet.

removing engine

The exhaust system to manifold was also a bear. I soaked the bolts in Liquid wrench & used a 2 foot long extension with ratchet & 17MM socket. You also need to prop up the transmission with some would blocks. On mine I swung the air condion off to the side. Good luck.

That doesn't sound too bad. $20 for a rental.

I still have to take off the exhaust system and remove the wire to the fuel injectors, I couldn't get them to come off because of the clips, but since I'm swapping in a new engine and computer, will I have to remove those wires to the fuel injectors or can I cut them?

Wow, it's been a while since I posted this!

I've had the BII parked for a long time, but now I'm starting to work on it again. I need to get some more info from you guys if I could.

I didn't even get finished getting the old engine out of there. How do I remove the engine from the transmission? The tranny in there is an A4LD, I've already removed the starter, what's next?

I've already pulled all the wiring off the engine and have the hood removed, along with the radiator too. Also, anybody have any tips for getting the fuel lines disconnected?

Thanks guys!

are you swapping the tranny too?? if so ,just disconnect it from the crossmember and if it's 4x4 you will have to drop the transfer case. to me it is easier to remove engine and tranny together. if you are reusing it, just take the 6 bolts out that bolt it to the block, remove the torque converter bolts and then the engine should break loose. hope this helps

I'm not doing a tranny swap right now at least, I figured I'd wait on that. So if I do decide to remove everything together (I should probably do to clean stuff up anyways), I would be able to cut the exhaust further down too since I wouldn't be trying to get it out around the tranny too.. that's sounding pretty tempting.

Ok so can I get a mini-list of what I need to do in order to do that?

I'm guessing I'll have to continue to take off the radiator support too for clearance issues? Then remove the tranny from the transfer case too, which means removing the driveshaft from the t/c, right? I just want to make sure I don't mess anything up here. I've got some mechanicing under my belt, but it's better safe than sorry.

Pull the engine and tranny together. Take off the water pump also. Those couple of inches really made a difference. I've done two the last year.

Mack - Did you pull off the front clip too? Like where the grill and everything is?

No, just the water pump. The water pump pulley flange kept hanging up on the front clip where the radiator mounts on. Pulled the water pump and the engine/tranny came out a lot easier.

I'll have to give that a go! It's not like I need the water pump on the old engine!

Just curious, what did you hook on to to pull it out?

On the 2.9 heads there are some bolt hole bosses that face upward above the exhaust ports. I was told by a ford mechanic to screw eye bolts into them and swing from there. I have seen a lot of 2.9's with u shaped brackets bolted there diagionally also. He said those were factory brackets used to install the engine by ford. I hope he was right because that's what i used.

all the wiring unplugs, theres no reason to mess with the fuel injectors.take the tranny out separate, you'll prolly never get the engine and tranny high enough to get them out. hook the chain around the intake
