Abandoned Puppies
We use hand gestures with dogs all the time, we just don't realise it. Use the commands words for a while, but get over it. Think aboutyour movements when you say the words... They watch your body gestures more surely than they listen to words.
Dogs do not have much vocal ability - it is all posture and gesture. They do not listen to us, they watch us.
Stop talking, and use your hands.....
They will understand you!
Then start watching the dog - they talk the same way.
It's up to you to figure out their mannerisms....

Around here there are many organizations that rescue and adopt out (adopt only, no euthanasia) pets and farm animals. Many of these orgs are made up of several individuals or families who start a non-profit just for this purpose. Helps 'em pay for it.
I found several good ones in my area through www.petfinder.org when I was looking for a dog. There are other online rescue orgs as well. Take the time now to do some online searching to identify the ones in your area so that when you see a critter in need, you'll know who to call.
If I had a bigger place, I would adopt a bunch of them.
Good for you Greywolf, for opening your home to your new companion.
