Tranny Noise

Ok, I am stumped. My 01 V10 4x4 Auto has developed a strang noise. At low rpms, there is a small grinding or rumbling noise coming from under the truck. At first I thought it might be a wheel bearing, but I do not hear the noise when I move the truck in neutral, only when it is in gear. It sounds like a bearing, but I do not know. The truck has 75000 miles and zero trouble.
Thanks and God Bless
Robert

Standard or automatic? If it's an '01 atomatic it would be the 4r100.

The 4R100 may be due a rebuild

There are many new upgraded parts

Usually a rebuilt 4R100 is much better then the factory one.

Make sure you transfer case is really in 2 wheel mode and your front hubs are disengaged to eliminate the 4x4 system as a noise source

The noise is not there when I put the truck in neutral and let is roll. It is electronic engagement for 4x4, so the hubs are automatic. If I turn them to manual, they will be engaged.

I agree with Fred. These factory automatic transmissions usually only last about 75 - 100k, depending on service and use.

Usually the torque converter is the first to go. But with that many miles you might as well spring for the rebuild. A new torque converter would be included in a full rebuild.

A properly rebuilt transmission will be stronger and last a lot longer. Check out the Automatic Transmission Rebuilders Association (ATRA) website. They will be able to locate a certified local transmission rebuilder. I use one of their local members shops when I had my f150-4r70w rebuilt several years ago and was amazed at the quality of the rebuild. It only cost me $1400, which was at the low end of what I researched it would cost. The 4r100 will probably be a little more. Make sure you ask for a heavy duty clutch pack, heavy duty torque converter, and a shift kit. They should automatically include any other updates in the rebuild.
