mirrors

I pulled the mirrors from my 79 F150 to replace the huge mirrors that were on my 75 F350 and they don't work the predrilled holes are up too high so If I want to mount the 4 point mirrors I will have to putty and paint the old and drill for new unless the is some other option? hint anyone ever dealt with this

Are the mirrors off of the '79 the low mount swingaway kind? If I understand you correctly, you are doing opposite of what I did...almost. I swapped a set of the west coast style mirrors onto my hi-boy in place of the swing away style. If you can get someone to help you it wont be bad at all. Position the mirrors where you want them end up and have your helper mark the holes with a sharpie marker. Drill the holes and shoot a little paint on them to keep them from rusting (mask around them with tape to keep the paint off your door's) Go to the hardware store or Lowes and pick up the appropriate size bolts, nuts and lock washers. Rubber gromets or flat washers will help protect the paint, keep vibration down, and help seal out moisture. Take your inner door panels off and roll the window up so you can tighten the nuts. As for the old mounting holes you can fill them with putty, Bondo, JB weld, whatever. Sand and paint! Good as new! Sorry this was so long, and I hope it helps.

So you preferred the west coast style. I guess that is what was original on my 75 ford and I don't like them but I hate to patch and paint more on those doors. I was hoping that something else would mount in those holes.

What I'm calling west coast styles are similar to a mirror you would see on a tractor trailer or dump truck. Bolts above and below the window. Mine came off a '69 ranger. Check out my gallery to see what I mean. On my truck I liked them better. Especially with chicken lights on the cab.

Yeah your mirrors are close.. Mine are mounted in three positions and are just a touch bigger I am trying to mount the more common mirror but dont want to have to cover the preexisting threaded holes I first have to remove the threaded part through the door skin and then bondo the holes Getting that threaded part out looks to be damaging to the skin...

You can get those "Threaded parts" at a hardware store, and I would use them for the new instalation of the new mirrors also. I forget what they are called, but take an old one with you. If used right, they can eliminate a potential rust problem.

As for the holes, if you can weld, or find someone who can weld, welding the holes up and then grinding them smooth would be a better way of sealing them, than bondo.

Prime and paint when done.

If you don't want to fill the holes or drill them out and cover them, check the hardware store or an auto trim shop for small plastic or rubber cap inserts. Just stick 'em in and and your good to go.

I need help guy's I thought I could use my original bolt holes with the screw in grommet with swing away mirrors from my 79 F150 but they do not match up at all My pattern is two on the top 1/2 inch down from window and 2"3/4 center to center and 7"1/4 down are two more at 2" apart This is the existing layout on my 75 F350 Is anyone familiar with this?

I found them the closest thing I found is an 85 ford van has the same pattern swing away mirrors except a little longer on the bottom but I ground off the pin and flippped it over and got it the closest I could I am still wondering if this is unusual or what But I may never find out
